Renovating: Reality vs Reality TV
Ah, reality TV. Or should I say, "reality" TV? Who doesn't love a grand reveal! And those amazing before and afters! But so often the renovations on TV happen in such an unrealistic period of time - it really drives me crazy! I'm here to break it down and give you #TheRealDeal.
TV shows typically spend only a very short few minutes on the planning and preparation phase of the project to instead focus on the scenes full of sledgehammers and action shots. In reality, the planning phase is a critical building block to a smooth and successful renovation. Beginning with a client's wish list and budget, a scope of work needs to be defined. Budget categories need to be determined (and adjusted). Decisions must be made around design concepts and level of finishes desired. Any structural changes may require the involvement of architects and engineers. Contractor and subcontractor bids need to be gathered, and permits need to be obtained. Phew, that's quite a list! Certainly not 100% of the decisions must be made up front, but it takes a significant amount of work and time before the first power tool ever makes an appearance!
TV shows also often feature an unrealistic time frame from when work begins and the "big reveal." Shows often bring in large crews and work around the clock. In reality, there are definitely things that can be done to expedite a project but factors such as work hours allowed or weather delays need to be realistically accounted for. And lastly, don't ever forget contingency time and contingency budget. Why? Because of Murphy's Law. But with good planning that it won't be work-stopping, budget-blowing, panic-inducing. It'll just be a little speed bump on the road to renovated bliss.
I'll be honest - yes, renovating is absolutely a lot of work. But, that doesn't mean it needs to be daunting or stressful (unless maybe you're into that sort of thing). With proper planning and experienced and knowledgeable professionals it can be an exciting process and yield results to be enjoyed for many years to come.
I leave you with a little quote from one of my favorite shows:
“This guy’s walking down a street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep, he can’t get out. A doctor passes by, and the guy shouts up, “Hey you, can you help me out?” The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along, and the guy shouts up “Father, I’m down in this hole, can you help me out?” The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by. “Hey Joe, it’s me, can you help me out?” And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, “Are you stupid? Now we’re both down here.” The friend says, “Yeah, but I’ve been down here before, and I know the way out.””
